Alberta Player Development League (APDL)
The Alberta Player Development League (APDL) is Alberta Soccer's highest level of youth player development for U14 to U17 athletes. Designed for players who are committed to training in a high-performance environment, the APDL combines year-round coaching, structured technical development, competitive league play, and sports performance support while following Canada Soccer's national standards.
At Calgary Rangers, the APDL is built around long-term player development. Every aspect of the program—from coaching and training to sports science and video analysis—is designed to help players continue improving while preparing for future opportunities within the Canada Soccer pathway.

What Is the Alberta Player Development League?
Alberta Soccer introduced the Alberta Player Development League (APDL) to create a standards-based environment for performance-level players across the province.
The league launched during the 2021 outdoor season with the U15 age group before expanding each year to include an additional birth year. Today, the APDL operates from U14 through U17, providing a complete development pathway for players pursuing higher levels of competition.
Every APDL club must meet standards approved by Canada Soccer, including:
- Full-year periodized technical training plans
- Minimum coaching licence requirements
- Video analysis
- Organizational excellence
- High-performance player development
The result is an environment where players receive consistent coaching, structured development, and meaningful competition throughout the year.
Canada Soccer Regional EXCEL Directors and National Team coaches regularly attend APDL matches and showcase events to identify players for future provincial and national opportunities.
Calgary Rangers and the National Youth Club Licence
Calgary Rangers Soccer Club is proud to be one of only seven clubs in Alberta, and one of the first 39 clubs in Canada, to earn the Canada Soccer National Youth Club Licence.
This designation recognizes clubs that meet national standards in governance, administration, infrastructure, coaching, and player development.
Only National Youth Club Licence holders are eligible to participate in the Alberta Player Development League, making Calgary Rangers one of a select group of clubs approved to deliver Canada's highest standards of youth player development.
A Complete High-Performance Environment
Success in high-performance soccer requires more than technical ability alone. Calgary Rangers has built the APDL program to support every aspect of a player's development throughout the year.
Players train with licensed coaches who follow a structured yearly technical plan while receiving support that extends beyond regular practices and matches. Throughout the season, athletes have opportunities to improve their technical, tactical, physical, and mental performance in an environment designed to prepare them for higher levels of competition.
Program features include:
- Individual Player Development Plans
- WinSport Sport Science sessions
- Sports performance testing combines
- Sports psychology education
- Sports nutrition education
- Five video analysis sessions
- Veo video platform access
- Physiotherapist coverage for every game
- Two futsal tournament registrations
- Additional showcase and tournament opportunities*
*Additional showcase events and tournaments are not included in program fees.
WinSport Sport Science
Player development extends beyond the field. Calgary Rangers partners with WinSport to integrate sports science into the APDL program throughout the year.
Players participate in structured sports performance sessions that focus on movement quality, athletic development, injury prevention, and overall physical performance. In addition, athletes complete two sports performance testing combines, allowing coaches and players to measure progress while identifying areas for continued improvement.
By integrating sports science with technical training, players develop the physical foundation needed to perform consistently throughout a demanding year-round schedule.
Individual Player Development
Every APDL player receives an Individual Player Development Plan designed to support continued growth throughout the season.
Coaches use observations from training sessions, matches, video analysis, and performance testing to provide individualized feedback and development goals. This process helps players better understand their strengths while identifying opportunities to continue improving technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.
Video Analysis
Learning doesn't stop when the final whistle blows.
Throughout the season, players participate in five dedicated video analysis sessions while also receiving access to the Veo video platform. Reviewing match footage allows players to better understand positioning, decision making, movement off the ball, and team tactics while reinforcing concepts introduced during training.
Video analysis provides another opportunity for players to learn, reflect, and continue developing throughout the season.
